WordPress Sitemap Generator for Google by Arne Brachhold

Arne has created this cool sitemap file for Google to index your webpage more efficiently.

Google announced yesterday a new tool for webmasters. The Google Sitemaps! You can submit you sitemap to Google and allow them to find all your pages without crawling every link. You can read more about this cool feature at searchenginewatch.com.

I created a small php file which will do the generation of the sitemap in a Google compliant format for you. At the moment, only posts, home page and static pages are supported. If you have better knowledge of WordPress than me, feel free to modify the script and include category pages etc.

Every URL in the sitemap may have a priority which represents the page priority on your website. My script calculates the it on the number of comments. This should be ok for most blogs, maybe i will add the post date to priority generation later.

I used to join a lot of this free money making programs and most of them went bust. How is this company going to survive ?

The company recruits people to sign up to receive sms advertising by promising to pay them US 15 c for every advertisement they receive.

This would all be hunky dory, except the model NEVER works and frankly, I'd advise them to change their model or shut up shop. Sorry if this is blunt, but if they take my advice, they'll thank me for it in the end - or end up kicking themselves if they ignore it.

There have been loads of these kinds of propositions online and they never worked there either.

And it's been tried in the UK on mobile by, among others, The Mobile Channel, who morphed into something else, when they discovered the inevitable. We even tried it at ZagMe, against my better judgment, but when the CEO of your main backer insists, you don't have a lot of choice in the matter...

Let's look at why it doesn't work, for a moment.

If I sign up and they send me the maximum number of advertising messages of 2 per day (which will be unlikely in the beginning as they have to sell to advertisers), I can earn the princely sum of $10 a month (roughly). In return, I have to have my phone beep at me twice a day with ads where I have no control over content, if they're well targeted to me etc.

$10 to most US citizens is not a lot of money, quite frankly. So the sorts of people attracted to this deal will be....people with not much money. This, in turn, does not make them very attractive to advertisers.

The company promises advertisers:

And, because our audience is subscription based, your messages are seen by the consumers interested in buying your products and services.

No they're not. They're interested in earning $10 a month. That's all. So even response rates will be unimpressive.

That's not to say a subscription-based sms service can't work - I've written a whole free white paper on it, if you haven't read it. But the main learning is that people welcome sms advertising, if they buy into a promise that they'll like what they receive, it'll take into account their preferences and interests and they can stop both the service or a specific advertiser easily and at any time.

Google AdSense Image Ads Versus Text Ads

In December 2004, Google announced a possible expansion to its image ads program within AdSense. This article gives an overview of image ads and provides information to assist you in determining whether image ads are right for you.

To begin, in May 2004, Google began offering publishers the option of serving image ads in addition to text ads on their websites. Image ads are graphical ads offered in four sizes: 728 x 90, 468 x 60, 120 x 600 and 300 x 250 pixels. Like text ads, Google's image ads are targeted to the content of a publisher's web page using AdSense's contextual advertising technology. According to Google, it began running image ads since “running a combination of image and text ads expands the available ad inventory for your site, and offers the potential for increased revenue.” Google stated that its technology determines, on a page-by-page basis, whether text ads or image ads are likely to make publishers more money. It then serves the appropriate format to their pages.

In December 2004, Google announced that it would soon expand its image ad program to include a wider variety of creative formats. Specifically, Google will begin accepting animated GIFs from a small test group of advertisers. While AdSense publishers will have the option to show image ads, they will not be able to choose whether to serve only still, versus both still and animated ads.

Unlike other technological advances that Google frequently announces, the response to Google's expanded image ad program has generally not been positive. Many AdSense publishers believe that Google doesn't even have a large enough inventory of still image ads, and that animated ads will detract from the user experience of their website. In addition, many attribute the successes to date of the AdSense program specifically due to its use of text ads. Text ads are often viewed by site visitors as relevant content, rather than standing out as advertising which consumers started tuning out a few years ago.

The question now is whether visitors are also starting to tune out text ads, and if this is the reason why Google has expanded its image ad program. Does Google know best, or are the publishers right in this case? The answer most likely is “it depends” and that it depends upon the demographics of the site visitors and the site's content. For instance, a site targeted to teenagers, who are used to high-quality animations from video games and movies, may increase profits from animated or still image ads. Conversely, a site about financial planning for seniors should probably stay away from images, as they may detract from the user experience. In the latter case, text that complements the ads (e.g., convinces readers why they need
financial planning assistance) will prompt visitors to click on the text ads, particularly if the text ads include lines such as “need financial planning assistance?”

AdSense publishers must consider the long-term goals of their websites, which typically includes having a positive user experience to ensure repeat visits and maximizing profits. They then should experiment with the different types of ads to see which types best serve their goals. Publishers should use the Channels feature that AdSense offers which allows them to track click-through rates and revenues on a page-by-page basis, so that they can analyze which mix of ad formats maximize their profits.

Group dating service Compa sponsors new entertainment blog site Hecklerspray

Compa .co.uk has agreed a fixed fee to take a tenancy slot on hecklerspray's homepage for the rest of 2005, with the aim of driving traffic and generate new sign-ups for its UK group dating service.

London-based hecklerspray.com is billed as a blog site for “discerning entertainment fans” and currently generates revenues via advertising, affiliate marketing and sponsorships. The agreement with Compa represents the site’s first fixed tenancy deal.

hecklerspray said it generated 180,000 unique user sessions in its first month in May.

"We talked about a CPM deal but felt that a fixed tenancy would allow us to benefit from hecklerspray's rapid growth, while providing some upfront cash for what is a new start-up," said Compa CEO Ed Fitzhugh. "It is an arrangement that works for both of us."

Hecklerspray editor Stuart Heritage said: "It made a lot of sense do agree a tenancy deal with Compa. We've got a few partnerships in place and more in the pipeline, both for hecklerspray and for other commercial blogs in the offing."

Formed in November 2004, Compa became the first company to introduce the group dating concept to the UK. It allows groups of users to search for like-minded groups to arrange a night out in order to meet new friends.

Vidius, is a U.S.-Israeli company whose motto is "stopping information leaks." Their system monitors e-mails and other communications, and can block or quarantine those that include sensitive or inappropriate data. Something they could be coming up is a system to screen blogging as it could ultimately leak out sensitive information. How accurate their software remains to be seen. With so many bloggers and blogs abound, can their software handle the load ? Even Trend Micro and Symantec's antispyware can't keep up with malware and spyware in the wild.

Short blog posts for higher SEO rankings

Darren from Problogger.net talks about the need to posts only short blog posts to get higher rankings in Search Engines. Sound good to me.. As I suspected, this is different from normal web pages.

Frequent short sharp posts work on a number of levels:

* Highly Targeted Content - A post of 150 or so words is likely to be pretty targeted on one particular topic. Search Engines love this - they know what it is about and will rank it higher on this.
* Search Engines like shorter posts. I personally think 150 might be 100 or so words short of what is ideal for SE’s but the research shows that shorter posts tend to be dealt with better than longer ones by Google.
* Readers like bite sized content - Research shows that readers scan content and that they rarely read things word for word. They also have notoriously short attention spans online. 150 words is easily digestible.
* High quantities of posts = more entry points to your blog - write one long 4500 word post each day and you create 1 new page on your blog. This is one possible new entry point on your site each day that will be indexed by Search Engines, appearing in RSS feeds etc. Create 30 posts and you can see you increase the chances of your blog being found exponentially. Multiply this 30 daily posts by 365 days in a year and you start the see the potential of such a strategy.

Is Netbux a Scam ?

Netbux and PayPup are quickly gaining attention as two awful scams. Covering the background, both programs promise to pay each member 2 cents for searching Google, Yahoo, eBay, MSN and many other sites with searching capabilities. Both were founded in April of 2005, first Netbux.org, followed by Pay-Pup.com. Pay-to-Search (PTS) seemed to be a big splash, with members able to earn thousands of dollars per month.

Unfortunately, both websites are overhyped scams. First of all, there is no way that any advertiser would pay 2c to Netbux and PayPup for each time a random user searches and receives an advertisement. Ads are not worth $0.02 each. Not to mention, referral commission is 100%, so Netbux and PayPup scammers are actually promising to pay $0.04 per search! If you know anything about the advertising business, $40.00 CPM is absurd, and no company would pay that much.

As if that were not horrible enough, Netbux and PayPup are offering to sell unreferred members to those willing to fork out some cash. At first, both sold referrals for $1 per each member. Later, Netbux increased the rate to $3, and PayPup to $2.50. In any circumstance, this is nothing more than a fishy smelling scam. Since referrals can earn $1 PER DAY for the user who purchased them, it makes zero sense for the website owners to sell them at such a low rate! The only possibility is that Netbux and PayPup simply want to earn more free money before they close down their business.

Perhaps they are eager for more money to make up for lost revenue. Both Netbux and PayPup had their Google AdSense accounts terminated, for two separate reasons. Netbux urged members to "CLICK HERE!" which is a clear violation of AdSense for Search policy. PayPup greedily edited its website code so that mesothelioma attorney and lawyer AdSense advertisements would always show up. Anyone with knowledge of the AdSense knows that these pay dollars per click, and forcing them to appear is against the terms of service. On top of that, Netbux was also removed from another advertisement company, Clicksor.

Forced to move on, both sites were required to find new advertisements. Netbux settled for selling 75,000 ad impressions for $29, which equals $0.0003 income per search. This is less than 1% of the 4 cents promised per search! Not even 1%! PayPup went solely with advertisements that only pay when users enter private and personal information, not exactly the most courteous way to earn income through members.

Now attempting to get quick cash by selling unreferred members, Netbux and PayPup earned well over $10,000 through sales of referrals. Ironically, PayPal caught on to the scam, and froze the accounts of both, meaning that they could not send or receive more payments. On they went, scamming again through 2CO.com. Once again, they were recognized for the scammers they are, and removed from that service as well. Finally, they had to settle for accepting payments via Charge.com, a high-risk company which simply put is a credit card transaction processor. Anyone foolish enough to give away money to these two scoundrels after seeing all of this occur certainly does justice to the saying, "A fool and his money are soon parted..."

Furthermore, if it were not apparent enough already, Netbux and PayPup are, in all honesty, the same company (scam). The same person, MidiFox.com hosted both websites, until traffic became too much to contain. One site simply was not enough to reel in users and advertisement agencies, as well.

Both websites say that they will never sell, trade, or give away any personal information. How then, do they justify the fact that anyone can see the email address of each referral he has - including ones which he purchased?! Netbux sneakily removed its forums right as PayPup was being launched, simply a way to stop users from communicating about the obvious relationship. PayPup went down for days at a time during the first week of its existence, causing many members, including referrals who had been "purchased" by someone else, to stop coming back and earning money for the one who had shelled out $1 per member. Netbux was hacked and its security breached. PayPup mysteriously made referral links virtually invalid, as anyone clicking on the "Create" button for a new account would have the referral code wiped away from their browser, a cheap way of getting more "unreferred" members to selfishly sell for more cash, and a clear violation of the statement that referral codes would stick to that potential new member's IP address, even if the browser were closed and the computer shut down!

Netbux and PayPup are most certainly scams. Feel free to check back shortly. The only ways they could survive more than a few months would be to ban multitudes of members with high earnings, lower their payment rates dramatically, or add tons of new advertisements. If none of those happens, you probably will not see them around after a few months, at least not with the same business plan.

| What you have to understand is that pricing per click on the same keyword varies from country to country, both for the merchant buying the click and for the person clicking on the ad. Merchants from any given country almost only always compete with merchants from the same country. It would be pointless to show an ad for an American computer network company to someone seeing the page in Pakistan, and the Pakistani merchant doesn't need Australians clicking on his ads either. He cannot serve them.

If you and I are both looking at the exact same page at the same moment, we are both going to see different ads. Ads that I click on will typically pay the publisher more than the ones that you click on.

If you want to grow your income, you have to take a look at is where your traffic is coming from. If your traffic is largely from the USA and so are your clicks, then this will be the highest paid traffic that there is. If it is coming from Pakistan, it's probably going to be amongst the lowest. As the amount of traffic and businesses use the Internet in Pakistan, Pakistani merchants will begin to pay more for ads and ads that are clicked on in Pakistan will net the publisher more. In the meantime, if you really want to pump up your income, aim for visitors from the USA, Europe, Japan, etc. |

Everyone hates late fees and being late will cost you dearly these days. For some credit cards today, if you are late, you will have to shell out as much as $40 each time. This can put a nice sized hole in your pocket really quick.

Below, I will provide you with some tips and strategies on how to steer clear of those monstrous late fees. This will not only save you a lot of money in the long run, but it will also keep those money-hungry credit card companies, I won’t mention any names, from getting your hard earned money.

Just pay your bill. One of the easiest ways of avoiding a late fee is to just pay your bill each and every month by sending in a check, money order, or other type of payment to your respective credit card issuer. Just make sure you follow the numerous guidelines, which are usually outlined on the back of each credit card bill, on how to send in your payment. These guidelines must be followed precisely if you want to guarantee that your payment will go through on time.

Payment guidelines may include everything from a specific payment address to the time of day by which the payment must be received to be credited that day. Many issuers also stipulate that payments must arrive in the preprinted envelope sent to the customer.

While the Fair Credit Billing Act requires issuers to credit payments the day they are received, each issuer is allowed to set specific payment guidelines. If any of the guidelines are not met, the issuer can take as many as five days to credit the payment.

An on-time payment could easily become late during that five-day period, so follow those payment guidelines carefully.

Just skip the payment. One of the more rare types of methods you hear of are Skip-A-Payment services. You can use these services to skip mortgage, credit card, or loan payments. Usually you would need to get in contact with your bank just to see if you even qualify or not. There are also independent companies out there that will allow you to do the same thing, no matter what bank you are a member of. Depending on whose service you use, the fee’s associated with it vary. When you use these types of services make sure you know how much you will be charged then decide if it’s worth it or not.

Pay minimum due immediately. One of the best ways to prevent a late fee from being charged to your account is to pay the minimum due immediately. As soon as you receive your bill, send in the minimum due. This will always insure that your credit card issuer received payment. You can always send in more money later if you decide otherwise. This is a great way to avoid missing a payment because if you forget to send extra money you can guarantee that you won’t be charged a late fee because the minimum due has been already been paid.

Move your due date. Are your credit card bills due at a time of the month when you're running low on cash? Many people have trouble saving money, so when it comes time to paying their credit card bills, they don’t have any cash to do so. One particular solution is to move your due date. Many credit card issuers will allow you to set your own due date to meet your specific needs. If you have trouble saving money, move your due date to a time when you do have money, like as soon as you get your paycheck. If you time your credit card bill to come the same day you get paid, you will always have cash to pay the bill.

Pay by phone. If you are one of those people that wait to the last minute to do everything or if you just forgot to send in your credit card payment early enough, you could always pay by phone. This guarantees that your payment will be on time. Just supply the representative on the other line with your checking account number and your bank routing number, which is printed at the bottom of each check. Usually the routing number is first and the account number is second. A lot of issuers allow you to pay by phone and some will charge you a pretty penny for doing so. Fee’s can range from $5 to $20.

Use other express methods. If your bank does not offer a “pay by phone” service and you need to get your payment to your credit card issuer as soon as possible, I recommend either sending your payment in by express mail or by Western Union. Either one of these services can get your payment to your credit card issuer immediately. These express methods are costly, but it will always most likely be cheaper than any fees associated with being late. Make sure you send your express payment to the proper address. Many issuers have separate payment addresses for express payments. The last thing you want to do is slow the processing of an express payment by sending it to the wrong address.

One of the biggest problems with Web sites is that the very first page on the site is turning people away.

Why? Because most Web site owners talk about themselves instead of talking about their Web site visitor.

You know what I mean. How often have you visited a Web site that starts off with the big bold heading "Welcome to XYX Company"?

And it only goes downhill from there.

The next paragraph says something like "XYZ Company has worked for 40 years in manufacturing, testing and selling ABC products to businesses around North America and the world. Blah blah blah ... who cares ... Yawn!"

That sort of introduction is almost guaranteed to lose you business!

But why is it so common? I think it's because people don't know what else to write!

So in this article I'm going to give you a formula for writing compelling text on your home page.

Here's the formula in a nutshell: BAD, WORSE, GOOD, HOW, YOU.

Here's how it works ...

1. Show them what's BAD in their business/life.
2. Show them that it's WORSE than they thought.
3. Show them how GOOD it could be.
4. Show them HOW to fix it.
5. Tell them how YOU can help.

I'm going to expand on these in a minute. But first notice that the first four are all about THEM, and you only start talking about YOU in the very last step.

OK, let's look at each of these in turn ...

=== 1. Show them what's BAD in their business/life. ===

What is your customer's biggest problem? What are they most worried about? What causes them to stay awake at night, tossing and turning?

The first step is simply to state that problem. That immediately gets rapport because it shows that you understand them. And it engages them as well.

For example, suppose you're a realtor looking for new clients, and you know that most vendors are worried about getting the best price for their house. You might start like this:

"Selling your home is one of the biggest financial decisions that you will make in your life. How can you be sure that you're getting the best price for it? And how can you be sure that your realtor is getting the best deal for YOU, not just the best commission for themselves?"

=== 2. Show them that it's WORSE than they thought. ===

OK, you've got their attention, but do they really understand how bad the problem is? What are the consequences of having this problem? If you dig a little deeper, you'll uncover the real costs associated with it.

For example, you might go on to say:

"You might choose a realtor who's local, or who has been referred to you, or maybe even some distant uncle who does this for a living. But what if they don't get the best deal for you? This could cost you a fortune! For instance, even if the price they get for you is just 1% lower than what it should be, that could amount to thousands of dollars. That's money out of YOUR pocket. And if you're planning to use that as a deposit on your new home, that 1% will cost you many MORE thousands of dollars interest in the coming years."

=== 3. Show them how GOOD it could be. ===

OK, now you've got them worried! They might have started out as neutral, bored or complacent. But now you've shown them the real cost, they are forced to think harder about their decision.

Now you show them the other side of the coin: If they didn't have this problem, what are the benefits to them?

For example:

"On the other hand, what if your agent got you 1% MORE than the normal price? A good agent can do that for you. Now that's extra money in your pocket! Money that you can use on a vacation. Or the college fund. Or an extra deposit on your new home, which could save you many times that amount in interest."

=== 4. Show them HOW to fix it. ===

Now you tell them - briefly - how to fix it. Like this:

"The secret of getting the best price for your house is to constantly sell its value, not its market price. If you know what your buyer's hot buttons are, you can make sure that all your marketing is aimed at pressing those buttons."

=== 5. Tell them how YOU can help. ===

Finally, you describe how YOU can help them to implement that solution, like this:

"Our team of trained professionals works closely with you to get the best possible price for your home. All of our realtors have at least 10 years experience in the market, all are currently active working with clients just like you, and all have Blah Blah qualifications. Contact us now for a free consultation, etc. etc."

=== Do you see how simple this is? ===

In just a few short paragraphs, it establishes rapport, demonstrates understanding, provides a solution, establishes your credibility, and encourages action.

By knowing the most expensive keywords on the internet, you can create websites and web pages based on these keywords. On these sites and pages, you can serve expensive ads and/or promote affiliate offers that reap high bounties when clicked or completed.

The challenge lies in driving traffic to these sites. One way to drive traffic is through search engine optimization, whereby you create a website that ranks highly on the search engines and receive “free” traffic. Or, if you already have an existing well-ranked site, you can create new pages linked from your existing pages. A second way to drive traffic is through online advertising.

With regards to advertising, one key is to understand correlations between keywords. By determining correlations between inexpensive and expensive keywords, you can advertise on the inexpensive keyword (via pay-per-click (PPC) advertising on search engines) to drive traffic to your website that serves ads based on expensive keywords. For instance, advertising on the keyword “painting” ($0.20 keyword), and sending visitors to your site about the related topic “home remodeling” ($2.00 keyword) allows you to profit from the wide spread between the keyword prices of the two correlated keywords.

Likewise there are many opportunities to run banner and other ads through online advertising networks to drive traffic to your website. These ads can run on both “painting” and “home remodeling” websites. The cost of CPM (cost per impression) advertising typically does not reflect the price of the keywords. That is, a banner ad on a “painting” website typically costs the same as a banner ad on a “home remodeling” website. This sharply contrasts the price of PPC advertising on search engines which vary widely based on the keyword.

There are two other ways to profit from knowing the most expensive keywords. The first doesn’t even require you to own or operate a website. In this method, you advertise using inexpensive means (e.g., via pay-per-click advertising on inexpensive keywords or CPM advertising) and direct traffic to high paying affiliate offers. The second method is to set up your own search engine. There are several companies that allow you to easily set up a search engine that serves PPC ads syndicated from Google, Overture or other PPC search engine networks. Once you create your engine, you can drive traffic directly to your PPC results, and get paid every time someone clicks on one of the results. Likewise, on your search engine’s home page, you can include many links to expensive keywords, so that when someone clicks on it, the engine shows expensive ads based on those keywords.

Understanding keyword pricing is critical to the online advertising, PPC search engine and affiliate marketing businesses – businesses that combine for over $25 billion a year in revenues. With a market of this size, generating substantial profits, if you have the right information, is really not that challenging.

He has postings on the ins and outs of blogging much like that of Darren at Problogger.net but not as in depth though. Still its quite cool.

Understanding Google AdSense

Google AdSense allows webmasters to dynamically serve content relevant advertisements on web pages. If the visitor clicks one of the AdSense ads served to the website, the website owner is credited for the referral. Google's AdSense program essentially allows approved websites to dynamically serve Google's pay-per-click AdWord results.

Website maintenance related to AdSense is very easy and requires very little effort. Webmasters need only to insert a Google generated java script into the web page or website template. Google's spider parses the AdServing website and serves ads that relate to the website's content. Google uses a combination of keyword matching and context analysis to determine what ads should be served. The java script calls the ad from Google and will ensure that ads are served each time a visitor goes to the web page.

Early on Google implemented a filtering system that allowed webmasters to prevent a specific domain's ads from being served on any websites in their account. Ad blocking meant that webmasters could prevent their competitor's ads from being dynamically served on their websites.

Google provides a wide variety of ad formats to match the most suitable option with a website. Webmasters can select from a handful of preformatted towers, inline rectangles, banners and buttons. The ad boxes can be modified by webmasters to resemble the website's color scheme. Channels can be used to measure performance on various domains, differences in revenue with various ad sizes, or placement. By assigning each group of pages to a specific channel and comparing results in custom channel reports webmasters can work at increasing their AdSense revenue.

Optimizing

Google determines the content of the ads that are shown, webmasters serious about earning revenue from Google AdSense can use the following guidelines to optimize their website and ensure that targeted and relevant ads are served. If Google's spider has not crawled the site and determined the nature of the content, public service ads may be served. Public service ads will not accrue any AdSense revenue if clicked. As a result Google allows webmasters to designate alternate ads. Alternate ads allow webmasters to utilize the ad space in the event that Google is unable to serve targeted ads to the web page. By specifying an alternate image, HTML page, or ad server the advertising space can always being used effectively.

1. Web page content on pages that ads are served should be static not dynamic.
2. Ensure that the robot.txt does not prevent the web page from being spidered. Robots.txt file's will need to be removed or the following text will need to bedded to allow Google's content bot to crawl the site: User-agent: Media partners - Google
3. If the website contains frames, select the ‘framed page’ checkbox when generating the ad layout code for that website.
4. The body of the page and title of the page should contain contextual words that indicate a common theme on the web page.

Revenue Earned

Although Google doesn't disclose the exact revenue share or percentage that webmasters will earn, webmasters will receive a portion of the amount paid for clicks on Google ads on websites.
AdSense Conclusion:

Overall, Google AdWords can provide great supplemental income to webmasters with content sites. Implementing and maintaining Google AdSense program on a content site requires very little effort and can often bring a steady stream of additional revenue for webmasters.

Content-based web sites - google advertisers want their ads on web pages that contain highly targeted keywords. Theme-based web sites - create a web site that focuses on highly targeted keywords. Google has recently made some changes in their AdSense program, and webmasters, busy as they are,

may not be aware of all the AdSense news. For those who don't know, AdSense is the Pay-per-click (PPC) revenue sharing program offered by Google to webmasters who run primarily content-oriented sites. The AdSense program offers a way for these webmasters to generate revenue where they couldn't in the past.

After signing up for the program, webmasters place a bit of code on their web pages where they want to display AdSense. Google's technology determines the subject matter of the page, and displays relevant ads on that page. If a visitor clicks on one of the ads, the advertiser pays Google, and the webmaster receives a share of the proceeds.

One of the biggest changes is that webmasters can now have multiple "blocks" or units of AdSense on their pages. Since the program started, Google has allowed only one block, but they now allow up to three per page. This means webmasters can get three shots for a visitor seeing and clicking on an ad. The blocks don't all have to be the same format - you can choose from any of several formats available, and all can have different border, text, and background formatting. You are able to specify alternate ads for each unit. In cases where Google's software isn't able to determine a theme to your page, Google will display Public Service ads. However, webmasters can choose to display their own ads, such as for affiliate products, instead.

As with most things, you'll need to test formatting, placement, and other variables to see which combination brings the best click-through rate for you, whether you use one, two, or three AdSense units.

Boosting Google Adsense earnings

Google AdSense is a great way for webmasters to monetize their websites. While many webmasters are struggling hard to earn $3 - $10 per day, some 'genius' webmasters have already enjoyed $30, $100, and even $300 a day from AdSense ads on their websites. How are these 'genius' webmasters differ from their counterparts? They think different! They think out of the box!
Let me share with you some tips which has been responsible in boosting my AdSense profits by 700%. Here are 5 of them, and if you follow these steps, I'm sure you'll see a difference in your AdSense income.
Here are the tips:

1- I concentrate on 1 format of AdSense ad, which is the Large Rectangle (336x280). This format has been proven to work with me in resulting high click-through rates (CTR). Why this format? Because the ads look like normal web links, and people are trained to click on these types of links.

2- I create custom palette for my ads. I choose white as the color for the border and background. This is because, all of my pages have white background. The idea is to make the AdSense ads look like they are a part of my web pages.

3- Previously, I put all my AdSense ads at the bottom of my pages. One day, I moved those ads to the top of the page. The result surprised me. My earning increased! Since then, I don't hide my AdSense ads anymore!

4- I maintain some links to other relevant websites, and I put my AdSense ads at the top of the links, so that my visitors see them first.

5- I automate the insertion of AdSense code into my webpages using SSI (server side included). You'll need to ask your web administrator whether your server supports SSI or not. Here's how to do it. You just put the AdSense code in a text file, save it as 'adsense.txt', and upload it to the root directory of your web server. Next, call the code on other pages using SSI.

This trick is really a time saver especially for those who use automatic page generators to generate pages on their website.

Google have added a sitemap to their Optimization Tips page to give publishers a few ideas as to what positions on your site might be best for Adsense Ads and profitable of course.

‘Certain locations tend to be more successful than others. This “heat map” illustrates these ideal placements on a sample page layout. The colors fade from dark orange (strongest performance) to light yellow (weakest performance). All other things being equal, ad placements above the fold tend to perform better than those below the fold. Ads placed near rich content and navigational aids usually do well because users are focused on those areas of a page.

While this heat map is useful as a positioning guideline, we strongly recommend putting your users first when deciding on ad placement. Think about their behavior on different pages, and what will be most useful and visible to them. You’ll find that the most optimal ad position isn’t always what you expect on certain pages.

For example, on pages where users are typically focused on reading an article, ads placed directly below the end of the editorial content tend to perform very well. It’s almost as if users finish reading and ask themselves, “What can I do next?” Precisely targeted ads can answer that question for them.’

Yahoo!’s Travel Submit Search Marketing Program

With the re-branding of Overture into Yahoo! Search Marketing, Yahoo! released a new program named Travel Submit. Travel Submit allows the travel industry (airlines, rental cars, hotels, vacations, cruises, and so on) submit “detailed listings of your travel offers and deals will be featured in highly relevant areas across Yahoo! Travel, giving you access to a vast audience of motivated travelers and targeted leads.”

In fact, they are pushing this Travel Submit program by giving “free clicks through June 15, 2005!” (see the bottom of the page). A WebmasterWorld thread named Yahoo Travel is expanding, where a member wrote that Yahoo! emailed him “discussing expansion of Yahoo Travel and that they’d like one of our sites to be a part of it.”

I was just having lunch with a friend of mine who is working on a new affiliate program. She seemed very excited about it, and as we ate our delicious cold lobster salad she gave me all the details. I began asking her a few questions, and as the creme brulee arrived she admitted that she's been a little disappointed with her sales. "It doesn't make sense," she groaned to me over her latte, "It's not like I'm trying to sell long underwear in the Bahamas. I'm offering the hottest widget of the moment for 10% less than anyone else on the web, and I've already linked my site to several affiliates, but no one's buying. What am I doing wrong?"

We went over the basics: good product, good price, good web site, good affiliates. "It's got to be something," I said, "what's your linking strategy?" She told me that she was using three different banners, and assured me that they looked really nice. "They're probably great," I assured her, "but the fact is, no matter how nice they are, they're still banners."

So what's wrong with banners? Nothing really, except that they've become a little too common and people have started to ignore them. If you do use banners, you've got to make sure they're eye-catching and professional. Try using rotating banners as a nice improvement on the basic. These banners download alternate images from a group each time the page is accessed, making the ad look a little different each time. Use rotating pictures of the different products you offer. This is a nice effect which might grab the attention of a repeat visitor who ignored you the first time.

Another effective link is the customer testimonial. Take a quote from a satisfied customer and use it as a sales tool. Ask someone who's been pleased with your business if you can quote something nice they said, or just ask them to make a statement.

Set it in an attractive font with your URL link at the bottom and have your affiliates place it on their page. People will be more inclined to read about someone else's experience than they would be to read an ad, and you'll get more business.

If your affiliates need website content or if they distribute an ezine, you may want to supply them with an informative article about your business. This should not be a blatant ad, but an informative article that the customer will benefit from reading whether they buy from you or not. Something effective might be a short piece about emerging trends in your line of business, and how you are responding to those trends. Close the article with a small business blurb and your URL link. People like reading new information, and you'll find you get a lot of clicks. And don't worry if you're not a good writer. Talk to someone at your local college English department. You may find excellent student writers who are willing to work for pizza. If you're not near a college, browse the web. There are all sorts of inexpensive writing services available online.

You can also supply your affiliates with a catchy signature file that links to your business. Write two or three lines about why your business is great. Try to be a little witty. Include your URL link at the end. Dedicated affiliates could use this sig file to close e-mail with, and you'll find yourself with even more business.

What it boils down to is this: you've got to be proactive with your selling program. You can't expect a very basic set-up to make you rich. People are getting more and more web savvy all the time, so you've got to surprise them with something original to get them to go to your site. If one thing isn't working keep trying something else until you get it right. If you spend even a little time tweaking your link system, you may just find your sales skyrocketing.

Earning Extra Income With Affiliate Marketing – Having Your Cake and Eating it Too!

Affiliate marketing is the single fastest growth industry on the Internet. Yet many people go into it without a solid recipe for success. Indeed, many look to earn extra income with affiliate marketing with no real plan, and that can severely hamper their efforts at becoming successful at it.

Make no mistake, although affiliate marketing can be an easy and fun way to earn additional income, it is work, and just like any other job, requires effort, perseverance, and above all, a clear line of sight from start to finish line.

Things like setting up your home office properly, getting some know-how, setting realistic goals, making connections, and investing in your business will not only ensure that you have a leg-up on your competition, but it will also ensure you are firmly standing head and shoulders above them.

Setting Up Your Home Base

Perhaps the most important first step you can take to becoming a professional affiliate marketer is to set up your home base – that little home office you’ve always dreamed about!

There are many good articles on the internet about ergonomic design, and with good reason. Anyone who is going to be spending a large amount of time on their computers needs a space that promotes good posture, positive environments, and takes care of safety issues revolving around the office workspace.

The best place to start might be to head down to your local Home Depot and touch base with a professional sales representative. They are trained to show you how to set up a first-rate ergonomic office while saving you some serious cash.

Ergonomics is the science behind preventing office workplace injuries, and office designers now make tables, chairs, and desktop accessories that reduce stress on your back, limbs, wrists, and tendons, and reduce stress injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome which can occur from long hours of doing small repetitive tasks.

You’ll want to start with an ergonomically designed desk that puts everything within easy reach, a good computer with a screen that won’t hurt your eyes, non-glaring lamps placed far enough away that your eyes won’t be soaking in light while you are trying to work on the computer screen, and a chair that is comfortable and promotes circulation to your legs and rest of your body.

Of course, having the greatest home office in the world won’t matter if you don’t take the next step to becoming a successful affiliate marketer: getting some good, professional training.

Learning the Trade

Nobody goes onto a worksite cold. You can’t walk into a restaurant and expect to become the head chef just because you dressed like one that morning. And no construction company in the world is going to put you in charge just because you want the extra money but lack any real training.

The trick, then, is getting some professional training and learning how to become a professional affiliate marketer.

The first step in this road to success is to find a professional affiliate marketer and see what they can do to help you get on your feet and get moving. Thankfully, there are a few affiliate marketing pros out there who supplement their income by fulfilling another dream for many of them: being able to teach their trade to other enthusiastic marketers and passing their collective knowledge on to others.

In fact, simply typing “Affiliate Marketing Training” into www.yahoo.com or some other search engine will find dozens and dozens of sites promoting quality affiliate marketing conferences that you can attend.

One of affiliate marketing’s brightest stars and biggest success stories is James Martell, and chances are pretty good that if you’ve looked into affiliate marketing at all you’ve seen his name pop up more than once. His downloadable home-study course and twice monthly audio newsletter for students of his program make him the good place to start looking for a great course and learning the inner workings of affiliate marketing.

Become a student of the business. Start by setting some realistic income goals and working to achieve them.

Setting Reachable Goals

One problem with some affiliate marketers is that many tend to overshoot both their skills and their plans by setting unrealistic income goals and becoming disenchanted when they are unable to attain them.

Certainly a goal of $5,000 a month is attainable, but the first time affiliate marketer is most likely not going to make that kind of money when they step into the ring for the first time.

Make no mistake; $5,000 dollars a month is a goal that can be achieved through affiliate marketing, but beginners should look for something more modest. Start small. Start with, “I’m going to earn an extra $50-$100 a day, by learning how to create my own great looking websites, that get free traffic from the search engines, by taking the time to learn how to do it, from someone who already does the same thing.”

As an income goal, it’s certainly achievable, and you would be doing yourself a favour by setting aside the extra time you will need to learn how to do things right, the first time. Like any skill, it takes time and experience before you really get good at what you are doing.

Set goals and get used to setting them often. Set up daily goals for little things. Set up weekly and monthly goals to work toward even larger goals. Get used to writing your wants and needs on paper, and then actively working toward those goals. You’ll be glad you did, and you’ll be amazed at how much something as simple as a “to do” list can help you focus your energy and become better at your craft.

There’s a great book out about goal setting called “Goals: Setting and Achieving Them on Schedule” by Zig Ziglar. Take a look at it if you feel you could use some extra help in this department. In fact, set a goal to purchase the book and read it if you have to!

Another important goal for you to set: if you are really looking to augment your earnings with affiliate programs, or plan on becoming a full-time marketer, you have to get out there and make connections.

Making Connections to Your Future

By all accounts, the professional affiliate marketing community is a tight-knit group of people who are constantly in contact with one another.

There is a large amount of information sharing, helping one another as a support group, and a general belief that by pitching in and helping out everyone can be successful in their new role as an affiliate marketer and learn from each others mistakes.

It would be extremely shallow to suggest getting out there and making friends simply to help your business along, and people tend to not look kindly upon those who do (and we all know someone like that, don’t we?). Instead, get out there and introduce yourself. Start by seeing where you can help others with their business, and in return people will be more inclined to help you when you need it.

Get out there and enjoy yourself, and get to know these people personally. You won’t only be better off from a business standpoint, but your life will be far richer for making good friends who can relate to the trials and tribulations of your business woes and successes.

Just being able to relate to like-minded people will relieve tons of work stress. You will always be able to discuss your new career and problems you are facing with people who understand what you’re talking bout and don’t simply see your job as “foolin’ around on the ‘puter”.

Of course, they’ll have no choice but to take you a little more seriously when you invest a little money and a lot of effort in your own affiliate marketing business and really make your image shine.

Investing in Your Business is Believing in Yourself!

It’s a well known truism that states, “It takes money to make money.” These words couldn’t be truer in the world of affiliate marketing.

Although affiliate marketing is relatively cheap to set up as a home business, there are still some costs involved in getting up and running smoothly. Things like home office accessories (remember that trip to Home Depot?) Can set you back large sums of money depending on how far you are willing to go at once.

There are also costs involved within the industry itself. For example, finding affordable web space ($8-$15 per month) and registering your own domain names ($10-15 per year) does add up.

You will also need to look at web site template options if you hope to save time by having your websites “pre-planned”. Low-cost templates, such as those found at www.affiliate-marketing-templates.com can greatly affect the way others view your site. Is it professional? Is it clean? A good web development company selling low cost affiliate website templates will be able to accomplish all of this and more.

4 Daily is an autosurfing program, that pays you 4% of your principal amount daily, for surfing 40 sites. When you first sign up, you receive a $4 account to earn from. This account may be upgraded by depositing money, or earning money from surfing to upgrade. All users receive credits from surfing to use to have other users surf their sites.

4 Daily has a fairly good layout, and looks professional, and the autosurfer has been very stable for me. There is a 20 second page viewing time when surfing, so you can get your 40 sites surfed in less than 15 minutes. Since you can leave your computer while it is surfing, this short amount of time is only beneficial if you are paying for a dialup connection. The auto surfing is bug free, and easy to do. The one disadvantage to this program is they do not guarantee payment if the server is down, and you cannot do your surfing.

Customer service is mediocre at best at 4 Daily. They provide a contact form, but they take a while to reply. There is also a FAQ, but this cannot help you if you have a specific question. The only other way to get help is the forums, where other members may be able to provide assistance. 4 Daily need to be easier to contact for help if they want to attract new internet users.

The 4 Daily forums are a link to all the users of 4 Daily. These forums have few rules against negative comments, or anything for that matter. This provides a non censored environment, which is good for getting the truth, but can be a little daunting, and hard to find real information.

4 Daily was started October 2004 and has now been paying out on the 15th of every month for 6 months. So far it has been fairly stable, but with the high percentage, and no other businesses to support the payouts, it may not be around for ever. If you do upgrade your account, the upgrade only lasts for 50 days. This is not as long as other programs, so it may not be so good for long term earning.

Overall, 4 Daily has a good program for the moment and I would recommend joining now, before it is over. If you are going to upgrade, just remember it is not guaranteed so spend no more than you can afford.
